Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has shared an update on opener Fakhar Zaman’s condition after he suffered an injury during the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 opener at the National Bank Stadium on Wednesday.
Fakhar sustained the injury in the very first over while fielding, landing awkwardly and appearing to be in discomfort. Unable to continue, he left the field and was replaced by Kamran Ghulam.

According to the PCB, the left-handed batter is being monitored for a possible muscular sprain. “Fakhar Zaman is being assessed and examined for a muscular sprain. Further updates will be provided in due course,” the board stated.
His injury adds to Pakistan’s concerns, as the team is already missing young opener Saim Ayub, who was ruled out due to an ankle injury. Fakhar remains Pakistan’s only specialist opener in the squad, and his absence could pose a significant challenge for the defending champions.
At the time of reporting, New Zealand had reached 139/3 in 29 overs, with Will Young batting on 88 alongside Tom Latham, who was on 27.
Pakistan will now await further medical assessments to determine Fakhar’s availability for the remainder of the tournament.
