Sindh and Punjab Announce Winter Vacations Schedule

The Punjab government has declared winter vacations for all public and private schools from December 20, 2024, to January 10, 2025, due to the ongoing smog crisis. The announcement was made by Punjab schools secretary Khalid Nazir Watto, who confirmed that students will have a 20-day break.

This decision follows severe smog conditions that forced schools to shift to online learning temporarily, particularly in Lahore, one of the most polluted cities in the world.

In Sindh, winter vacations will begin on December 22, 2024, and last until December 31, 2024, with schools and colleges reopening on January 1, 2025. The break was approved by the Sindh government’s school education department steering committee.

The hazardous air quality, caused by industrial emissions, crop burning, and vehicular pollution, has raised health concerns, especially for children and the elderly. Despite the break, many parents and educators remain worried about the long-term health impact of the smog on students.

In Lahore, air quality remains dangerously high, and authorities continue to advise residents to wear masks and limit outdoor activities. The winter break offers some respite for students, but it also highlights the urgent need for sustainable solutions to combat the pollution affecting the region.
