Government announces public holiday this week

The Government of Pakistan has declared Saturday, November 9, 2024, as a nationwide public holiday in honour of Allama Iqbal Day, commemorating the birth anniversary of the esteemed poet, philosopher, and visionary Dr. Allama Muhammad Iqbal.

The announcement was issued in an official press release by the Cabinet Division, aiming to honour Iqbal’s enduring legacy in shaping the ideological foundation of Pakistan.

In line with this declaration, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has announced that all its branches will remain closed on November 9. Financial institutions and banking operations across the country will pause for the day, affecting routine transactions, banking services, and financial markets.

Allama Iqbal, often regarded as the “Spiritual Father of Pakistan,” is celebrated for his contributions to Urdu and Persian literature and for his inspiring vision that spurred the demand for a separate Muslim homeland in the subcontinent.

His works remain a vital part of Pakistan’s cultural and ideological heritage, with themes emphasizing self-realization, unity, and spiritual renewal.

The public holiday allows citizens to reflect on Iqbal’s teachings and the role he played in envisioning a united Muslim identity. Public events, literary gatherings, and educational discussions are expected to be held nationwide to honour his contributions, with schools, government offices, and banks closed for the day.
