In a bid to reduce expenses, the federal government has decided to eliminate approximately 150,000 vacant positions across various ministries, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb announced during a press briefing in Islamabad.

The finance minister revealed that the federal cabinet had approved the abolition of nearly 60% of unfilled posts in government ministries and departments.

This decision aligns with a broader strategy to streamline government operations and address rising expenditures, which currently stand at around Rs 900 million.

A high-level committee, formed by the Prime Minister, conducted a comprehensive review of 43 ministries and 400 departments, assessing their performance and relevance over the last three to four decades.

Based on the committee’s recommendations, these unoccupied positions will be abolished to improve efficiency and reduce redundancies.

Aurangzeb added that the review process is being implemented in phases. The first phase includes six ministries, the second phase covers four, and additional ministries and departments will follow in subsequent phases.

The initiative also seeks to devolve certain responsibilities to provincial governments and shut down unnecessary departments.

The finance minister also spoke about gradual reforms within the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and highlighted the government’s commitment to sustainable development.

He emphasized that the “Udan Pakistan” programme will play a pivotal role in achieving these goals, with significant involvement from the private sector.
