The federal government has approved an additional Rs2 billion to combat fake news targeting state institutions. The decision was made during a meeting of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC), chaired by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb.

The funds are intended to support the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) in countering disinformation campaigns through technological upgrades and cybersecurity enhancements.

According to officials, Rs1.22 billion of the approved amount will be used to modernize the ISPR’s technological infrastructure, while Rs723 million is earmarked for strengthening cybersecurity capabilities.

The ECC highlighted the growing need to address fake information, especially amid rising concerns over propaganda aimed at undermining national stability.

The military had initially requested Rs2 billion for immediate use and an additional Rs1.6 billion in recurring funds annually. While the one-time amount of Rs2 billion was approved, the recurring funds will be included in the regular budget during the next fiscal cycle.

Officials noted that the ISPR has been playing a vital role in countering misinformation and strengthening public trust in state institutions. The funds will enable the agency to match advancements in adversarial technologies and fulfill its mandate effectively.

This step reflects the government’s commitment to tackling the spread of fake news and ensuring that state institutions remain resilient against disinformation campaigns designed to sow discord and confusion.
