Punjab Considers Electric Bus Service Between Four Major Cities

The Lahore Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Dr. Athar Waheed has proposed an intercity electric bus service to help reduce traffic congestion, carbon emissions, and road accidents in and around the provincial capital.

According to the proposal, around 800,000 to 1 million vehicles and motorcycles enter Lahore daily, while nearly half that number exit the city. This massive traffic flow, the CTO said, has become a leading cause of smog, gridlocks, and frequent road accidents at entry and exit points.

To address these challenges, Dr. Waheed has suggested connecting nearby cities such as Kasur, Nankana Sahib, and Sheikhupura with Lahore through an electric bus network. In the first phase, the e-bus service will operate between Lahore and these three cities, while the second phase will link them through an intercity train network.

The initiative aims to provide an eco-friendly, affordable, and time-saving travel alternative for commuters while easing the city’s growing transportation burden. Officials say the project could significantly reduce private vehicle use, lower pollution levels, and improve overall road safety.

Dr. Waheed has formally sent the proposal to the Commissioner of Lahore for review and implementation, emphasizing that sustainable urban mobility is essential to combat smog and promote cleaner transport solutions in Punjab.
