Meteorologists have warned that the monsoon season in Pakistan may extend until the end of September this year due to changing weather patterns linked to climate change.

Traditionally ending by mid-September, the monsoon is now expected to linger longer, with heavier rainfall likely in the coming weeks.

Experts noted that so far, southern Pakistan has experienced significantly less rainfall compared to previous years. Monsoon currents have mostly impacted northern regions, including parts of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

However, a shift in wind direction from August 10 may direct the monsoon system towards the southern parts of the country by mid-August.

Meanwhile, the Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued an alert for the sixth spell of monsoon rains, predicting heavy showers in most districts starting August 5. These rains may cause medium to high-level flooding in the Chenab and Jhelum rivers.

Rainfall is expected in Murree, Galliyat, Lahore, Faisalabad, Bahawalpur, Dera Ghazi Khan, and many other districts. PDMA reports indicate low-level floods at Khanki in the Chenab and parts of the Indus River.

Tarbela and Mangla dams are nearing full capacity. Authorities have been instructed to stay alert and ensure emergency services are ready. Citizens are advised to take precautions and contact PDMA helpline 1129 in case of emergency.
