For the first time in Pakistan, a comprehensive plan has been created to digitize Rawalpindi’s transport system.
According to sources, the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) will be responsible for developing the software for this pioneering digital public transport initiative. The project includes the installation of a control room and an e-tag system at the Pirwadhai Bus Terminal.
This new system will gather comprehensive information on vehicles parked at the bus terminal. The data collected will include the vehicle’s registration number, owner’s name, color, fitness certificate details, driver’s license, route number, and tracking system information.

The control room will monitor all vehicles entering and exiting the bus terminal, ensuring that only those meeting safety and service standards are permitted to depart.
Inspired by similar systems in Paris, London, and the United States, Pakistan’s first digitized transportation initiative will serve as a model. If successful, the project will be expanded to other cities across Punjab.
It will also allow citizens to lodge complaints online regarding public and government transport services. Rashid Ali, Secretary of the Regional Transport Authority (RTA), described the digitalized transport system in Rawalpindi as a pioneering project.
He noted that IT support has been obtained from the Punjab Government, and senior officials from the IT and Transport departments will visit Rawalpindi on September 2 to finalize the plan.
