Freelance writers produce written content for clients — businesses, publications, agencies, individuals — and get paid per project, per word, or sometimes by the hour. The work usually happens remotely, gets delivered digitally, and covers a wide range of formats.

Step 3: Build a Portfolio Before You Apply for Anything

Clients want to see samples. That’s just the reality. And yes, this feels like a chicken-and-egg problem when you’re just starting out, but it’s more manageable than it seems.

Three approaches that actually work:

WordPress, Wix, and Squarespace all have affordable options that don’t require any technical skill to set up. The design should stay minimal. Clients are visiting to read your writing, not admire your web design choices.

One thing that actually makes a difference: a specific headline. Something like ‘Freelance Health Writer for Medical Brands and Wellness Startups’ tells a visiting client immediately whether you’re relevant to them. Compare that to something vague like ‘Writer and Content Creator’ — that could mean almost anything.

Step 5: Start Finding Clients

This is the part people dread the most, and it’s understandable. But there are a few channels that work reliably, even at the beginning.

·       Job boards  are the most direct starting point. Platforms like Upwork, the ProBlogger Job Board, and Contently post writing opportunities regularly. The competition can be stiff, but applying teaches you a lot about what clients actually want.

Step 6: Set Your Rates and Protect Yourself

New writers almost always underprice their work. It’s a confidence issue as much as anything else, but it’s worth pushing through because undercharging also attracts lower-quality clients.

A rough breakdown of what the market looks like:

·       Intermediate (with a solid portfolio): 15–30 cents per word
