The federal government has announced a revised weekly schedule for government offices, introducing a four-day workweek as part of austerity and fuel conservation measures.

The notification states that the revised arrangement has been issued in continuation of an earlier Cabinet Division notification dated March 9, 2026, which introduced a series of measures aimed at reducing fuel consumption and easing pressure on national resources in view of the prevailing regional situation affecting petroleum supplies and prices.

Under the new schedule, government offices will function for four working days each week. The additional weekly holiday has been introduced to support fuel conservation efforts by reducing travel and operational requirements across government institutions.

The notification further states that government officials working in federal and provincial government establishments in BS-20 and above, or those drawing a monthly salary of Rs. 300,000 or more regardless of pay scale, may voluntarily forgo two days’ salary.

However, this provision does not apply to officials serving in the health and education sectors. The notification adds that the decision has been issued with the approval of the Cabinet Secretary and will be published in the Gazette of Pakistan.
