The Green Electric Bus Service has expanded to the tehsil level with its launch in Gujar Khan, marking a new phase in Punjab’s public transport rollout under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s flagship initiative.

Provincial ministers Khawaja Manshaullah Butt and Bilal Akbar Khan attended the inauguration ceremony along with elected representatives and district administration officials. The service will operate between the Gujar Khan Bus Terminal, Sohawa city and the Police Complex.

Officials said 14 electric buses will serve the route, offering a modern and environmentally friendly travel option to residents. Senior citizens, women and students will be allowed to travel free of charge under the provincial government’s policy.

Speaking at the ceremony, provincial leaders said the expansion of the electric bus network to the tehsil level aims to improve connectivity in smaller cities and provide safe and reliable transport facilities. Each bus has been equipped with surveillance cameras to enhance passenger security.

The transport department has announced plans to deploy 1,100 electric buses across Punjab this year, with an additional 1,500 buses proposed for the next phase. Authorities said the broader objective is to reduce fuel consumption, cut emissions and modernize the province’s public transport infrastructure.
