Rain and Heavy Snowfall Expected From December 22 to 24: PMD

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast widespread rain, thunderstorms, and heavy snowfall in the western and upper parts of the country from December 22 to 24.

According to the PMD, a strong western weather system will begin affecting Pakistan from December 19 and bring significant changes over several days. The system will first enter Balochistan and then move toward northern regions.

Under the system’s influence, Balochistan will receive rain, wind, and thunderstorms, along with snowfall over hilly areas. Affected districts include Quetta, Ziarat, Chaman, Pishin, Qilla Abdullah, Qilla Saifullah, Noshki, Harnai, Zhob, Musakhel, Turbat, Gwadar, Jiwani, Lasbela, Kech, Awaran, Panjgur, Khuzdar, Washuk, Chagai, Kharan, and Kalat from the evening of December 19 to December 20.

The system will then move into Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where rain, wind, thunderstorms, and moderate snowfall in upper areas are expected from the night of December 20 to December 22. The affected areas include Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Kohistan, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Buner, Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Orakzai, Kurram, Waziristan, Peshawar, Charsadda, Nowshera, Swabi, Bannu, Karak, Dera Ismail Khan, Tank, and Kohat.

Gilgit Baltistan and Kashmir will experience moderate to heavy snowfall from December 20 night to December 23 morning. Rain, wind, and snowfall are expected in Diamir, Astore, Ghizer, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, Ghanche, Shigar, Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Poonch, Hattian, Bagh, Haveli, Sudhanoti, Kotli, Bhimber, and Mirpur.

In Punjab and Islamabad, rain and thunderstorms are expected from December 20 evening to December 21 in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, the Potohar region, Mianwali, Bhakkar, Noorpur Thal, and Layyah. Murree and the Galiyat are likely to receive rain and snowfall during the same period.

Cloudy weather with drizzle is expected in Sargodha, Khushab, Faisalabad, Hafizabad, Gujranwala, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Sialkot, Narowal, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Multan, Jhang, Dera Ghazi Khan, and Toba Tek Singh on December 20 and 21.

In Sindh, most areas will remain partly cloudy to cloudy on December 19 and 20.

The PMD warned that snowfall could block roads and create slippery conditions in northern and hilly areas, including Naran, Kaghan, Swat, Astore, Hunza, Skardu, Murree, the Galiyat, and parts of Kashmir from December 20 to 22. The department also warned of possible landslides and avalanches in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit Baltistan, and Kashmir and advised tourists to avoid unnecessary travel during the forecast period.
