The Punjab Cabinet has approved significant amendments to the Motor Vehicle Ordinance of 1965, introducing stricter penalties and updated safety regulations. The approved summary, outlining 20 key changes, has been sent to the Punjab Assembly for legislation.

Under the revised ordinance, helmet use will be mandatory for both motorcycle riders and passengers. The changes also propose the legalization of digital challans and computerized driving licenses, aiming to modernize traffic management across the province.

The amendments overhaul the current fine structure, replacing the existing Rs. 200 to Rs. 1,000 penalties with higher fines ranging from Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 20,000. Overspeeding violations will carry fines of Rs. 2,000 for motorcycles, Rs. 5,000 for cars up to 2,000cc, Rs. 20,000 for vehicles above 2,000cc, and Rs. 15,000 for commercial or public transport vehicles.

Traffic signal violations may result in fines between Rs. 2,000 and Rs. 15,000, while using a mobile phone while driving could attract penalties up to Rs. 15,000.

The amendments also introduce a point-based system for traffic violations. Drivers who accumulate 20 points will face license suspension for six months to one year, depending on the severity of their offenses.

Officials said the revisions aim to improve road safety, enforce compliance, and modernize traffic operations, while providing clearer accountability for drivers across Punjab.
