Punjab Introduces Heavy Traffic Fines and Points System for Violations

The Punjab government has approved a significant increase in traffic fines along with the introduction of a new points-based penalty system aimed at improving road safety and curbing traffic violations across the province.

Under the revised penalties, fines for various offenses have been raised substantially. Motorcyclists will now face a Rs. 2,000 fine for every violation, while motorists driving vehicles above 2000cc will be charged up to Rs. 20,000 for overspeeding.

Violations such as signal breaking, overloading, and driving on the wrong side (one-way) will also attract heavy fines of up to Rs. 15,000. The previous fine range of Rs. 100 to Rs. 500 has been replaced with a much stricter structure to ensure compliance with traffic laws.

In addition to higher fines, the provincial government has introduced a points-based traffic violation system. Under this new rule, each offense will result in a deduction of two to four points from the driver’s license. Accumulating 20 points within a year will lead to the suspension of the license for a period ranging from two months to one year.

Officials said the move is part of a broader road safety reform plan to promote responsible driving and reduce accidents. The approved amendments will soon be presented in the provincial assembly for final approval.
