The federal government is likely to approve another hike in petrol and diesel prices from October 1, sources in the oil industry revealed on Monday. The proposed increase, finalised by the industry and now under review, ranges between Rs1.97 and Rs4.65 per litre.

According to the summary prepared, petrol prices are expected to rise by Rs1.97 per litre, while high-speed diesel (HSD) could see an increase of Rs2.48 per litre. Light diesel oil (LDO) may go up by Rs1.76 per litre. Kerosene oil, widely used in rural households, faces the steepest hike of Rs4.65 per litre.

The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) has forwarded the summary to the Ministry of Finance through the Petroleum Division. The final notification is expected after the prime minister’s approval, officials said.

Earlier, on September 16, the Finance Division kept the petrol price unchanged at Rs264.61 per litre but raised the price of high-speed diesel by Rs2.78, setting it at Rs272.77 per litre. The revised prices were implemented immediately and remain effective until the end of September.

Officials maintain that such revisions are part of a routine fortnightly review, which adjusts local fuel prices in line with fluctuations in global oil markets and exchange rates. However, any increase is expected to add further pressure on consumers already grappling with high inflation.
