Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan has directed the National Highway Authority (NHA) to make all motorways across Pakistan barrier-free, aligning with international standards of digital tolling and traffic management.
Presiding over a meeting at NHA headquarters, the minister announced that Artificial Intelligence–based monitoring would initially be launched on the M-1 and M-2 motorways.

The new system will use computerized surveillance to detect traffic violations such as over-speeding and automatically generate text alerts for vehicle owners.
Aleem Khan highlighted that the current practice of motorway police stepping in front of speeding vehicles must end, calling it a serious safety risk. “Technology should take over enforcement,” he said, stressing the need for modern solutions that protect both motorists and officers.
The minister also ordered reforms in revenue collection and contracting. He instructed that toll plaza auctions be conducted transparently and that commercial activities along highways follow a uniform, fully digitized policy to ensure accountability. Public input, he added, should be actively encouraged to improve overall services.
On land use, the NHA was directed to set fair NOC fees based on city size and business type. Aleem Khan further emphasized expanding tree plantation along highways, with private sector participation in planting, maintenance, and preservation to deliver long-term environmental benefits.
