Islamabad’s Faizabad Interchange Upgrade Announced

0

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has scrapped its earlier plan to widen the loops of the Faizabad Interchange and will now pursue a full redesign of the entire structure to address long-term traffic issues.

The decision was made on Friday during a meeting chaired by CDA Chairman Mohammad Ali Randhawa. He directed the engineering wing to work on a permanent solution rather than a temporary fix. “Expansion of the loops alone is not the answer. We need a plan that will work for the next three decades,” he said.

Initially, the CDA had invited bids for widening the loops of the interchange, which serves as a key connection between Islamabad and Rawalpindi and is often used as a protest venue. The project was estimated at around Rs200 million, and bids had already been opened. However, the work order was never issued.

Instead, three consulting firms have been tasked with preparing a master plan and design for the entire interchange. Once completed, the plan will be presented to the interior minister for approval.

According to CDA Member Engineering Syed Nafasat Raza, the design will guide phased construction based on available funding, aiming to permanently reduce congestion at one of the busiest junctions in the region.
