NCERT Issues Red Alert Over WhatsApp Hacking Threat in Pakistan

The National Cyber Emergency Response Team (NCERT) has issued a red alert for WhatsApp users in Pakistan, warning of a sharp rise in phishing and hacking attempts that could compromise user data.

According to the advisory, cybercriminals are using fake links and counterfeit verification codes to trick users into giving up access to their WhatsApp accounts. Once breached, these accounts may be misused for spreading fake news, committing fraud, or stealing private photos and contact lists.

The warning also highlights deceptive tactics such as fake bank loyalty programs and prize offers, which are designed to appear genuine. These scams often prompt users to share sensitive details, including login credentials.

NCERT has advised all users to enable two-step verification in their WhatsApp settings as a critical safeguard. This extra layer of protection significantly reduces the chances of account hijacking.

Users are also urged to avoid clicking on suspicious links, particularly those related to address verification, rewards, or surveys. Even messages from known contacts should be approached with care if they seem out of character.

With WhatsApp being one of the most used apps across Pakistan, the red alert is a serious reminder for users to remain cautious and adopt better digital security habits.
