The Punjab government has approved a tenfold increase in traffic violation fines across the province as part of a broader push to improve road safety and discipline.

The decision was made during a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, focusing on traffic management and public safety. In addition to the fine hike, it was decided that parents or guardians of underage drivers would face criminal charges, with FIRs to be registered against them.

CM Maryam also directed strict legal action against dangerous driving, including one-wheeling, and ordered the immediate removal of road obstructions, especially on Bedian Road and other key routes.

The meeting also reviewed a plan to remodel 372 traffic points in Punjab, including 77 in Lahore, to reduce congestion. It was decided that all challans would include video or photographic proof to ensure transparency.

Digital roadside screens will be installed to alert commuters about traffic jams in advance. Hefty fines will also be imposed on those caught using mobile phones while driving.

The government will crack down on heavy trailers parked along main roads and vehicles with faulty headlights. A proposal to update traffic police uniforms was also considered.

The traffic force will be divided into five categories and equipped with modern vehicles and tools.
