The Punjab government has intensified its efforts to tackle water wastage by imposing strict penalties on violators.
In Rawalpindi, the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) has fined two individuals Rs10,000 each for misusing water, marking the beginning of a broader crackdown aimed at conserving resources.

According to WASA’s Managing Director, Salim Ashraf, a water emergency has been declared due to a severe shortage. He warned that if February and March remain dry, the crisis could escalate.
The city currently faces a significant gap between daily demand (68 million gallons) and supply (51 million gallons). Additionally, underground water levels have dropped to 700 feet, raising concerns about long-term availability.
To address the situation, the Punjab government has banned washing vehicles at home, with violators facing a Rs10,000 fine. Similarly, construction sites are no longer allowed to use groundwater.
Authorities have also ordered the closure of unauthorized car wash stations, mandating them to install water recycling systems by February 28, 2025. Non-compliance will result in a Rs100,000 fine and possible closure.
Officials have urged citizens to use water responsibly and cooperate with these measures to prevent further shortages. They have also advised households to cut back on excessive water use, warning that stricter penalties may follow if the crisis worsens.
