Iran is reportedly planning to purchase JF-17 Block III fighter jets, jointly developed by Pakistan and China, marking a shift from earlier expectations that it would acquire Russia’s Su-35 jets.
The move could significantly bolster Tehran’s air force while offering a cost-effective alternative to more expensive aircraft.
The JF-17 Block III is a single-engine, multi-role fighter jet equipped with cutting-edge features. Its KLJ-7A AESA radar enhances target detection and tracking capabilities, while advanced electronic warfare systems and long-range missiles add to its combat effectiveness.

The aircraft’s lightweight design and lower operational costs make it an attractive option for countries looking to modernise their airpower.
On the other hand, the Su-35 is a heavy twin-engine fighter jet of the 4++ generation, known for its exceptional manoeuvrability and advanced systems. It is equipped with the Irbis-E radar, capable of detecting targets up to 400 km away, and can carry a variety of heavy weapons.
However, production delays and limited technical support for the export version of the Su-35 have raised concerns, potentially prompting Iran to explore alternatives.
Reports suggest that Iran may pursue a hybrid fleet, combining Su-35s and JF-17 Block III jets, to diversify its capabilities. Tehran is also exploring the possibility of locally producing advanced jets, such as Su-30s and Su-35s, through collaboration with Russia.
