Internet Speed in Pakistan Set to Increase with New Undersea Cable

0

A new undersea internet cable, set to provide Pakistan with 24 terabytes of bandwidth, is expected to greatly enhance internet speed and reliability in the country. This 45,000-kilometre cable, installed by a French company, will significantly improve connectivity.

Currently, Pakistan relies on approximately 8 terabytes of bandwidth supplied by seven existing cables.

The new system, which connects the African region to Pakistan, aims to address longstanding issues of slow internet speeds. Popular platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram are also expected to perform more efficiently with the enhanced bandwidth.

P@SHA Chairman Sajjad Mustafa Syed, speaking on Geo News’ program Geo Pakistan, noted that while the cable is not yet active, it is expected to go live next year. He also shared that four additional major internet lines, including those supporting 5G, are in development to permanently resolve connectivity issues.

“We need 5G due to bandwidth congestion and fibre connectivity for mobile towers. With the new cables and infrastructure upgrades, our internet capacity will nearly double, ensuring stable connectivity for the next several years,” he explained.

At a convocation in Jamshoro, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari emphasized the importance of affordable and uninterrupted internet access, describing it as a fundamental right. Criticizing internet censorship, he pledged to introduce a Digital Rights Bill in Parliament to secure equitable access.

“Share your suggestions with me on Instagram, Facebook, and X,” he urged, underscoring his commitment to digital freedom and improved internet infrastructure.
