Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif inaugurated the “Honhaar Scholarship Scheme” on Wednesday at Punjab University, marking a significant step towards supporting education. The ceremony began with the recitation of the Holy Quran, followed by a national anthem and a poetry performance by GC University’s musical society.

During the event, Maryam Nawaz announced that out of 70,000 applications received, 30,000 scholarships would be awarded, including 18,000 for male students and 12,000 for female students.

She also unveiled a new initiative offering interest-free loans in easy instalments, aimed at enabling students to launch businesses and reduce financial pressures on their families.

The Chief Minister revealed plans to restart the laptop scheme in January, ensuring merit-based distribution of scholarships and laptops regardless of political affiliation. “This program will turn the dreams of underprivileged students into reality,” she stated.

Addressing the gathering, Maryam Nawaz highlighted the importance of education for Pakistan’s future. “Educating talented students is my responsibility. True politicians invest in the next generation,” she said.

She criticised the previous governments for failing to utilise public funds effectively, which she argued left millions of children without education.

Maryam Nawaz stressed that students represent the identity of Pakistan and should focus on education rather than protests. “None of us want to see students holding sticks and stones,” she added.

Dr Farukh Naveed, Secretary of Higher Education, shared key details about the scheme, including its inclusion of students from 15 private universities and matric and intermediate position holders. Scholarship recipients were honoured with a guard of honour during the event.

The Chief Minister also emphasised the government’s commitment to merit-based appointments across Punjab, expressing her dedication to the welfare and future of the province’s students.
