Weddings banned in Punjab from October to December

The Punjab government has introduced a new policy to tackle smog, which includes restrictions on weddings during the winter months when air quality typically worsens.

This policy was presented to the Lahore High Court, and officials announced that starting next year, weddings will not be allowed between October and December, aiming to lower pollution during the smog season.

Advocate General Punjab informed the court that, for the first time, the government has allocated a specific budget to fight smog.

The plan includes seasonal measures, like limiting weddings, which are known to increase traffic and energy use during peak pollution months.

The Lahore High Court praised the government’s efforts, calling the current administration’s policies an improvement over previous ones.

The court also encouraged extending these initiatives to other districts and highlighted the distribution of super seeders to farmers as a positive move to prevent crop burning, which contributes to smog.

The court further pointed out that other countries reduce emissions by closing shops early, suggesting similar steps for Pakistan.

Additionally, the judge recommended implementing a “one-dish” rule at weddings and reducing celebrations to a single event, rather than the usual three.

The next court hearing is scheduled for 15 November, where the government is expected to present further updates.

With Lahore experiencing hazardous air quality levels, these measures aim to protect public health by reducing smog and promoting cleaner air practices.
