The Privatisation Commission Board of Pakistan has turned down the latest bid for Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) and put forward new proposals for the airline’s privatisation, which will now be sent to the cabinet committee and the federal cabinet for approval.

This decision was made during a meeting led by Privatisation Minister Aleem Khan, where various privatisation initiatives were reviewed and important recommendations were approved. Speaking at the meeting on Wednesday, Khan emphasized that all privatisation efforts, including those concerning PIA, must strictly follow legal guidelines and keep the national interest as a top priority.

“The final decision on the privatisation of institutions like PIA rests with the cabinet committee,” he said, adding that steps should be taken to enhance future bidding processes.

Khan also directed officials to speed up the privatisation of PIA and other public entities, stating, “We are bound by our oath to undertake whatever actions are necessary for the welfare of the country and its people.”

He highlighted the importance of drawing lessons from the current PIA privatisation process to improve future efforts. The board also reviewed key elements of the privatisation of other state-owned projects, marking further progress in Pakistan’s broader privatisation agenda.
