The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced plans to block all SIM cards registered under the names of deceased individuals.

It announced that all SIM cards registered under the names of deceased persons will be blocked as of October 15, 2024.

The authority has advised citizens who wish to transfer these SIMs to their names to complete the necessary documentation at the relevant franchise or service center of their respective SIM providers to prevent any disruption in service.

Previously, PTA developed a phased strategy to block SIMs. It stated that the the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has provided it with the data required.

The plan outlines that in the initial phase, SIMs registered with fake or canceled CNICs will be deactivated. The second phase will target SIMs associated with expired CNICs, while the third and final phase will focus on blocking SIMs registered under the CNICs of deceased individuals.

Furthermore, subscribers have begun receiving notifications on their SIMs regarding these upcoming changes. Earlier, Pakistan’s tax authority, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), said Thursday it has blocked 210,000 SIM cards of users who have not filed tax returns in a bid to widen the revenue bracket.
