In a landmark move, the Sindh Department of Transport has announced to launch electric vehicle (EV) taxis and Pink EV taxis. This will be the first introduction of such services in Pakistan.

The announcement was made by Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon during a special event. Speaking at the event, Minister Memon highlighted the dual objectives of the initiative: to enhance public transportation and to provide a dedicated and safe service for female passengers.

The Pink EV taxis, in particular, will be driven exclusively by female drivers, ensuring a secure and cost-effective transportation option for women.

The groundwork for this initiative was laid in May during a meeting chaired by Minister Memon, who also holds the portfolio for Information, Transport, and Mass Transit.

During the meeting, a comprehensive plan was revealed to operate 200 electric taxis in Karachi, including 50 Pink EV taxis specifically reserved for women passengers.

“These measures not only prioritize women’s safety but also promote sustainable transportation and yield economic advantages for all stakeholders involved,” Memon remarked during the May meeting.

He further emphasised that the electric taxi service, managed under the Sindh Mass Transit Authority (SMTA), will generate employment opportunities for unemployed youth.

Furthermore, the environmentally friendly nature of these taxis is expected to result in significant savings in oil expenditures, benefiting the environment, the public, and the government.
