In a notification released on Sunday, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has announced the closure of Allama Iqbal International Airport for three hours daily during the monsoon season.

The authority stated that due to a high concentration of birds during the monsoon season, both runways of Lahore airport will remain closed from 5:00 am to 8:00 am for safety reasons.

The CAA has communicated this decision to all domestic and international airlines to prioritize passenger safety. It is pertinent to mention that Punjab is expected to experience 35% more rainfall than usual this year.

According to Provincial Disaster Management Authority’s (PDMA) Director General, Irfan Ali Kathia, the expected heavy rainfall will require thorough preparations to protect communities and infrastructure.

“Our teams are working around the clock to clear obstructions and improve drainage systems,” Kathia added.

Dr. Babar, the Director of Weather Forecasting, stated that higher-than-normal rainfall is expected in July and August. This raises concerns about flooding in rivers and canals and the potential for urban flooding in the northeastern and southeastern parts of the country.
