At a ceremony held at General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi today, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa officially finished his six-year extended tenure by handing over command of the armed forces to General Asim Munir thus later took charge as new COAS.

The ceremony marking the change of command represents the long-standing custom that represents the seamless change in military command. Former military leaders could also be seen among the attendees as the ceremony got underway to the sounds of a GHQ military band playing a medley of folk songs and national anthems.

Senior officers, both active-duty and retired, diplomats, and government officials were there.

Gen Bajwa and Gen Munir both placed wreaths and offered fateha at the Yadgar-i-Shuhada (Monument to Martyrs) in GHQ before to the ceremony.

“In addition to being a Hafiz-i-Quran, he is a professional, capable and principled officer. I am certain that under his leadership the army will reach new heights of success,” the outgoing Chief said while paying tribute to his successor.

Gen Bajwa remarked, looking back on his military career, that the voyage, which started many years ago, was finally coming to a close.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Gen. Sahir Shamshad Mirza and Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar Sidhu both attended the ceremony.

Shehbaz Sharif, the prime minister, chose Gen. Munir to command the nation’s armed forces on November 24. President Arif Alvi approved his appointment in its entirety that day.
