The Punjab government has announced that it will distribute 100,000 electric bikes (e-bikes) to students over the next year and later expand the scheme to include government employees.

The decision was made during a meeting of the Transport and Mass Transit Department chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz as part of the province’s green transport initiative.

Under the first phase, students will receive 100,000 e-bikes through an interest free installment plan. The government will provide a Rs. 70,000 subsidy for each e-bike, while beneficiaries will pay an estimated Rs. 2,100 monthly installment.

Male students will make a Rs. 14,000 down payment to obtain an e-bike. Women students, however, will not have to pay the down payment or registration fee, as the Punjab government will bear those costs. They will only pay the Rs. 2,100 interest free monthly installment.

The chief minister also approved the inclusion of government employees in the e-bike scheme after the initial student phase. Eligible employees will be able to purchase e-bikes through the same interest free installment program.

The e-bike initiative is part of Punjab’s broader effort to promote environmentally friendly transportation. The government also plans to expand electric buses, e-taxis, and electric three wheelers across the province to reduce emissions and improve public transport.
