In a significant step towards strengthening bilateral relations and boosting regional tourism, Pakistan and Uzbekistan held a high-level tourism engagement in Islamabad. The event saw the participation of senior tourism officials, diplomats, and key industry stakeholders from both countries. Leading the Uzbek delegation was Umid Shadiev, Chairman of Uzbekistan’s Tourism Committee, accompanied by Ambassador Alisher Tukhtaev. On the Pakistani side, senior officials from the Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation (PTDC), along with representatives from the local tourism sector, were present.

The PTDC Managing Director highlighted the rich shared historical and cultural heritage between the two nations, deeply rooted in the ancient Silk Road. “Tourism is not just an exchange of money; it is an exchange of stories, experiences, and friendships,” he remarked, underscoring the power of travel in fostering peace and collaboration.

The discussions centred on tapping into tourism opportunities in both nations—ranging from Uzbekistan’s historic cities of Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva, to Pakistan’s scenic northern regions and archaeological marvels such as Mohenjo-Daro and Shahi Fort. Pakistani tour operators were also invited to explore Uzbekistan as a travel destination.

The Uzbek delegation offered a comprehensive overview of Uzbekistan’s diverse tourism offerings, encompassing its cultural, historical, and natural attractions. Shadiev reaffirmed Uzbekistan’s commitment to deepening ties with Pakistan, stating, “Uzbekistan sees Pakistan not just as a neighbour, but as a trusted friend,” and expressed his vision of creating a tourism bridge connecting the two nations.

Actionable steps were discussed, including the launch of joint cultural festivals, the promotion of youth and media exchange programmes, and enhancing direct flight connectivity between the two countries.
