On a journey from Phoenix to Honolulu on Sunday, a Hawaiian Airlines plane encountered “extreme turbulence,” inflicting injuries on at least 36 passengers, 20 of whom were brought to emergency rooms, according to authorities.

According to a statement from Honolulu Emergency Medical Services, eleven individuals were in serious condition. A 14-month-old baby was one among the patients that were taken to the hospital.

According to Honolulu EMS, the victims suffered major head injuries, lacerations, bruises, and loss of consciousness.

“Medical care was provided to several guests & crewmembers at the airport for minor injuries while some were swiftly transported to local hospitals for further care,” the airline said in a tweet.

Before the jet, which was carrying 278 passengers and 10 crew members, touched down in Honolulu, there was turbulence for 15 to 30 minutes.
