Pakistan’s renowned former bowler, Shoaib Akhtar, has revealed the training methods that helped him improve his bowling speed and eventually break the 160 kmph barrier in the ICC WorldCup 2003.

As Shoaib Akhtar reveals his biggest secret, the Rawalpindi Express told Sportskeeda that he began dragging light automobiles on Islamabad’s highways before progressing to hauling a truck for at least 4-5 kilometres.

“I used to consistently bowl 157 and 158 kph, but I couldn’t seem to hit 160 kph.” In the video, he says, “I started planning regarding myself to train in order to cross the 160 kmph barrier.”

“Initially, I tied up myself to a tyre and pulled it but the tyre was too light to build my muscles. Later, during the nighttime in Islamabad, I tied myself to a small car and pulled it but this also looked light training for my body.”

Shoaib Akhtar said he intended to tie himself to a truck and pull it afterwards. This worked out since he began training and was able to pull a truck nearly 5 kilometres, he added.

With 161.3 kmph versus England in 2003, Shoaib Akhtar holds the ICC World Cup bowling record.
